 Llewellyn van Wyk |
The South African Institute of Architects (SAIA) has conferred life membership on Llewellyn van Wyk in recognition of his contribution to architecture and the Institute, over many years. A senior researcher at CSIR Built Environment, Van Wyk specialises in ecological design in the built environment, and sustainable building and construction activities. He is a past president of the SAIA and was the first South African architect to hold the presidency of an international architectural organisation, the Commonwealth Association of Architects.
Van Wyk played a leading role in a number of SAIA initiatives, including the drafting and adoption of a new constitution for the Institute, to bring it in line with the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa Act (Act 108 of 1996), and drafting the Institute's Environmental and Habitat Policy. He established the journal, "Digest of South African Architecture" (of which he was editor for 10 years), and led the SAIA's participation in the drafting of the Construction Charter.
Van Wyk has also served on the Council of the Construction Education and Training Authority (CETA) and was chairperson of the National Committee for the Built Environment Professional Consultants Sector.
Formal presentation of the SAIA citation and certificate of life membership will take place on 21 February 2007.
