Theuns Knoetze is a highly experienced manager who currently heads the Construction competence area in CSIR Built Environment. The research groups in this competence area span a wide range of technologies, including construction materials, construction methods and construction industry development. Since September 2006, Knoetze has also been acting manager of the Infrastructure Systems and Operations competence area.
Focus areas and responsibilities
- Leadership: includes motivating and leading research groups and individual researchers to deliver on CSIR Built Environment's research strategy.
- Management: strategic human capital development to advance individual researchers through their research careers; performance management and ensuring implementation of quality initiatives.
- Business: includes constructing and implementing a business plan for operation, sustainable growth and robustness of the competence area and ensuring that the competence area remains a national leader in its field.
- Research and research investment: includes contributing to research strategy development, and implementing appropriate components of research strategy; contributing to strategic investment goal setting and development of a research strategy for the competence area; ensuring high-quality SET expertise and development of appropriate SET capacity and profiles; and establishing and servicing strategic alliances

Experience
Since joining the CSIR in 1990, Knoetze has held a number of management positions in the research area known at the time as CSIR Building and Construction Technology. He managed the Fire Engineering Sciences group for a period of three years, followed by a two-year stint as manager of the Materials, Structures and Ceramics programme. From 1998 to 2005, he was responsible for the general management of the Technical Agency of Agrément South Africa, where he gained extensive experience in the field of innovation in construction.
Prior to his appointment to his current position in July 2005, he managed the Construction Technologies programme in CSIR Building and Construction Technology for a period of four years. Knoetze has published more than 18 papers.
