Published research highlights

The impact of the CSIR heavy vehicle simulator (HVS) on the performance of the SA road network
Research conducted with the CSIR-designed HVS machine results in significant savings in road building and rehabilitation costs.
Measurement of vertical motions of bulk carriers navigating in port entrance channels
The CSIR has developed a decision-support system for ship draught allowance, which were verified by local measurements of ship motions with simultaneous recording of tide, wave and ship conditions.
Asphalt rutting and how to prevent it
Concerns have been expressed that the design of hot-mix asphalt does not adequately address prevention of rutting. This paper presents a consolidation of best practice in the design and application of asphalt layers pertinent to the mitigation of rutting, while being mindful of other performance requirements in terms of fatigue resistance and durability.
Aggregate packing characteristics of good and poor performing asphalt mixes
A CSIR study has explored the grading characteristics of good and poor performing HMA mixes, using techniques for determining the porosity of the Dominant Aggregate Size Range and the permeability characteristics of the mix.
