Dr Phil Paige-Green

Dr Phil Paige-Green is an internationally recognised expert in unsealed and sealed low-volume roads, road construction materials and soil stabilisation.

Current activities and research interests

  • Problems related to the sustainability of gravels for unsealed roads
  • Assessment of upgrading techniques and strategies for low-volume sealed roads
  • Improvement of natural and waste materials by mechanical and chemical stabilisation
  • General geotechnical and construction materials investigations.

Experience

Paige-Green has over thirty years of experience in research, dissemination and implementation of findings with respect to various aspects of roads and pavement engineering. He has worked in 22 countries and his main areas of speciality include the following:

  • Unpaved and paved low-volume roads
  • Road construction materials and problems
  • Stabilisation of soils
  • Slope stability, subgrade and other geotechnical problems
  • Pavement engineering
  • Waste materials for road construction
  • Road and structure failure investigations and technical audits
  • Road rehabilitation investigations
He has authored or co-authored more than 80 refereed papers, 250 contract, research and unpublished internal reports, four Technical Recommendations or Methods for Highways (TRH and TMH) documents and authored or contributed to various books, syntheses, manuals, guidelines and Standard Specifications in a number of countries. He also regularly lectures at various universities, presents courses, reviews papers for national and international conferences and journals (on 2 editorial boards) and is supervisor/examiner of post-graduate students and theses in South Africa and overseas. He has acted as an expert witness in proceedings regarding accidents on gravel roads. Currently he is Vice-President for Africa: International Association of Engineering Geology and the Environment.
