Experience

Kobus Labuschagne has 22 years of experience in transportation and traffic engineering in a metropolitan environment. In his current position at CSIR Built Environment, which he joined in 1997, he deals mainly with traffic and safety engineering-related work, including intelligent transport systems (ITS). He is considered the leading expert on traffic calming in South Africa. Many of the traffic safety projects involve assisting road authorities with the development of road traffic safety business plans and strategies as well as the development of policies and programmes on various traffic management issues.

In his current position as research group leader: intelligent systems and traffic management, he is involved in projects with elements of ITS applications in the transport engineering and management, transport economics and transport policy domains with a focus on the interdependencies of transport and socio-economic development and the progression towards sustainable community development. Within the CSIR, the emphasis is on more significant research and development, and aligned with the CSIR mandate, Labuschagne is conducting research on integrated, web-enabled transport data management.
