Did you know?

  • The United Nations declared 2009 to be the International Year of Natural Fibres.
  • A composite material is made from two or more very different materials (plywood and concrete are common examples), mixed together to form a new material with better properties (stronger/more flexible/more heat resistant etc). The Hummvee, for instance, is made entirely of composite materials.
A natural fibre composite combines a natural fibre with any other type of material. It is often referred to as a bio-composite, as it is usually environmentally friendly.
  • The CSIR is involved in several research projects involving natural fibres.
  • Since the 1960s, the use of synthetic fibres has increased and, as a result, natural fibres have lost a lot of their market share.
  • South Africa produces around 54% of the world’s Mohair supply. Most of it comes from the Eastern Cape and ‘Cape Mohair’ is known to be the best quality in the world.
