A group of employees from the CSIR Biosciences recently took part in the “3rd Rural Health Career Day” which was held on 16 March 2012 at the Lehurutshe Hospital at Zeerust in the North West. The event was attended by groups of learners, ranging from Grades 10, 11 to 12, and from different high schools in nearby areas. Learners were able to quiz representatives of traditional universities, universities of technology, parastatals and public sector departments about career options and health-related issues.
The event was organised by the University of the Witwatersrand in conjunction with the North West Department of Health, as well as the local district of Education. The aim of the event was to equip learners with the necessary information and knowledge geared towards encouraging them to have the wisdom to make the right decisions regarding their sexual behaviour, self-esteem, careers and responsibility towards their communities. Many schools in the rural areas do not provide career counselling and such an event offers them an opportunity for proper career guidance.
Other institutions that participated in the event include the University of Johannesburg, Human Sciences Research Council and other provincial departments.
