Night Of The Stars Awards

Objective and Award Categories

The objective of the Night of the Stars Awards is to recognise and reward those who have contributed to the DPSS HCD programmes. A number of awards will be made as follows:

  1. Best Bursar Award
  2. Best Intern/In-Service Trainee Award
  3. Best Student Award
  4. Best Coach/Mentor Award
  5. Young Professional Award
  6. DPSS Executive Director’s Award

The awards will only be conferred to individuals whose nominations meet the minimum criteria. Thus it is possible that an award is held back in a particular category due to the nomination not meeting the minimum criteria. The submissions will be assessed by a selected panel of adjudicators. The adjudicators will consider the quality of the motivations. Any other relevant supporting material (e.g. a copy of a presentation delivered by the nominee or other forms of recognised outputs) is encouraged. The winners in each category will be awarded R2 000.

  1. Criteria for awards
    1. Best Bursar Award
    2. This award is for an individual on the bursary program who has reached and maintained high academic performance and has shown good progress in the attainment of his/her degree while contributing to the output of the team during vacation work. The individual must also demonstrate a positive attitude, eagerness to learn and be a team player. A supporting letter from their coach/mentor should be provided.

      Minimum standards for this award are:

      • Evidence should be provided of above-average academic performance;
      • An excellent grasp of work processes and methodologies as demonstrated during vacation work;
      • Evidence of the bursar showing improvement, learning and implementing what he/she has learned.

    3. Best Intern/In-Service Trainee Award
    4. This award is for an individual on the internship/in-service training program who has achieved and maintained high quality performance and has shown good learning progress in his/her respective field. The nominee displays a positive learning attitude, while contributing to the team outputs with his/her creativity and on-time delivery. Mentors/supervisors should provide a supporting letter.

      Minimum standards for this award are:

      • Evidence should be provided of learning progression and implementing what has been learned;
      • Evidence of a track record could include high quality presentation of a task or project entrusted to the intern;
      • An excellent grasp of work processes and methodologies is needed;
      • The candidate must have excellent behavioural attributes, such as developing and maintaining good personal and professional relationships and an active contribution as a team member.

    5. Best Student Award
    6. This award is for excellence in research by an individual on the Studentship Programme. This student is conscientious and produces a high quality of work, taking full advantage of the opportunity presented to them. Mentors/supervisors should provide a supporting letter.

      Minimum standards for this award are:

      • Evidence of high quality work should be provided, i.e. presentations, publications, supervisor reviewed
      • An excellent grasp of research processes and methodologies is needed.
      • The candidate must have excellent behavioural attributes, such as developing and maintaining good personal and professional relationships and an active contribution as a team member.
      • The student must have written a clear and achievable project plan while adhering to the plan and timelines.

    7. Best Coach/Mentor Award
    8. This award is to an individual who demonstrates an extraordinary contribution to the CSIR objectives by providing coaching/mentoring. Supporting information will be sourced as needed from two or more to individuals participating in the HCD program.

      Minimum standards for this award are:

      • The number of students coached/mentored should be no less than two.

      • Evidence of continued interest and support of the protégé’s professional advancement should be provided (e.g. creating opportunities for networking & professional connections, visits to peer laboratories or organisations; co-publishing research etc).

      • There should be evidence of successful project/research outcomes (including projects undertaken during vacation work) and/or obtaining higher qualifications.

    9. Young Professional Award
    10. This is an award in recognition of above expected contribution by an individual younger than 35 engaged in Research &Development. The award must be motivated on the basis of a product or products that demonstrate independent thought, innovation and leadership.

      Minimum standards for this award are:

      • The recipient should be younger than 35 at the end of the year in which the work was performed.
      • An identifiable product or products that have been subjected to credible, external peer-review must be motivated. Where applicable, the existence of the products should be verified with reference to the CSIR’s technical outputs database.
      • A clear motivation that demonstrates the independent role of the candidate in producing the work.
      • There must be evidence that the research work of the candidate demonstrates potential to make a significant scientific contribution.

    11. DPSS Executive Director’s Award
    12. The purpose of the Executive Director’s Award is to recognise the extraordinary effort and contribution an individual has made to the fulfilment of HCD requirements towards the CSIR DPSS objectives.

      This award will be made at the Executive Director’s discretion and nominations from the staff of the CSIR DPSS are therefore not required. However the Executive Director may request the advice of some staff members in the selection of the recipient(s).
