Electronics Defence Evaluation Research Institute (EDERI)

The world-class MecORT radar and electro-optical research facility supports, among others, radar angle tracking accuracy; tracking of low-flying objects in severe multi-path conditions often experienced in naval environments; advanced detection and tracking techniques of small objects in sea clutter; identification of aircraft types; and advanced electronic protection.

The EDERI provides concept demonstrators, decision support services and specialised systems in the areas of platform and system self-protection, strategic surveillance, test and evaluation facilities, command and control (C&C), the emerging research areas of persistent real-time surveillance and communications electronic warfare and cyber defence. The CSIR has been the frontrunner in radar and optronic systems research on the African continent.

This research assists the South African Navy (SAN), for example, with the latest tools to better patrol South African waters as well as with peacekeeping efforts across the continent. We develop new radar and optronic technology demonstrators and provide operational test and evaluation support.

The EDERI integrates its offerings under the larger umbrella of situation awareness, utilising a state of the art Interoperability Development Environment (IDE) to test, evaluate and conceptualise surveillance systems and the associated C3I infrastructures.

The knowledge base in platform self-protection focuses on the development of advanced electronic countermeasure and electronic counter-countermeasure techniques. The competence has grown significantly in the area of specialised radar and optronic electronic warfare test and evaluation facilities, which include the state-of-the-art, internationally competitive digital radio frequency memory technology and the mobile radar and optronic measurement facilities such as Fynkyk, Fynmeet, IRML and MecORT. An extensive modelling and simulation capability supports the knowledge base application in areas such as Ground Based Air Defence System selection and optimisation, C&C system specification, doctrine development and general acquisition decision support for the DOD.
