Experience

With 23 years of experience as a design engineer, Monk continues to serve the CSIR with distinction. He has served in a range of roles with the aerodynamic design of eight aircraft, six of which have been constructed at the CSIR, and all of which have flown successfully. Monk's technical expertise include those required for aircraft design, performance and stability and control prediction, software development, mechanical design, computational fluid dynamics, computer aided design/draughting and manufacture, wind tunnel testing, aircraft and mission modelling and simulation and a wide range of aeronautical engineering skills.

He has also provided assistance in design projects for final year students at the University of Pretoria while serving as external examiner for the School of Mechanical Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand. He mentored staff members in development of helicopter and missile flight and navigation models and in the use of panel codes. He also successfully mentored staff working in virtual reality.

Monk is the chairman of the National UAS Policy Coordination Committee tasked with investigating the integration of unmanned aircraft into national airspace. He is also a member of the Board of the Aeronautical Society of South Africa.

Monk is research group leader of the aerostructures group and has presented five papers and authored over 30 reports.
