Mauro Morelli is an aeronautical engineer specialising in experimental aerodynamics particularly in transonic and supersonic wind tunnel testing and analysis.
Current activities and research interests
- Transonic wind tunnel testing
- Supersonic wind tunnel testing
- Wind tunnel data assessment and qualification
- Wind tunnel wall interference assessment and correction
- Wind tunnel data uncertainty assessment
Formal education
Dottore in Ingegneria Aeronautica, Pisa University (Italy), 1991
Experience
Mauro has over 15 years experience in transonic and supersonic wind tunnel testing. He has tested a number of different airframes including combat aircraft, missiles, bombs, stand-off weapons, projectiles and isolated aerodynamic components. Significant experience was gained in characterising supersonic inlets for ramjet propulsion applications.
He has participated in the development of wind tunnel testing techniques such as wall interference assessment and correction, wind tunnel data uncertainty analysis and the definition of wind tunnel testing procedures and protocols for the transonic wind tunnel at the CSIR. He has maintained an active collaboration with his Alma Mater (the University of Pisa) through the exchange of under and post graduate students working on their graduation theses at the CSIR.
Mauro is currently the research group leader for experimental aerodynamics research in the CSIR and manages the complete suite of wind tunnels and other facilities at the CSIR.
Mauro has authored/co-authored more than 40 organisational contract research reports and 8 papers published in international journals or presented at international conferences.
