World drug discovery expert to tutor CSIR scientists
Four scientists from CSIR Biosciences have been selected to embark on an exciting new drug discovery training programme - a joint venture involving South Africa's National Research Foundation (NRF), the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and Emory University in the United States of America.
Researchers discover superior enzyme for water purification
A team from the enzyme technologies research group at CSIR Biosciences has discovered a unique laccase that is superior to that used by commercial companies. The laccase bodes potential success in the treatment of wastewater on an industrial scale.
Orphan crops need attention too
Pearl millet, cowpea, cassava, finger millet - these are but some of the less popular food sources neglected by the world and science and are often referred to as orphan crops. Two scientists in the CSIR's plant biotechnology research group, Dr Bridget Crampton and Dr Maretha O'Kennedy, are contributing to a new scientific interest in these crops.
