Accolades for Meraka Institute researchers


Dr Ntsika Msimang

Nhlanhla Mabaso
Recent media reports have confirmed recognition by roleplayers in the information and communications technology (ICT) sector for contributions by the Meraka Institute's Dr Ntsika Msimang and Nhlanhla Mabaso.

Mabaso heads the open source centre (OSC) of the Meraka Institute, a national research centre managed by the CSIR. Msimang is in charge of the OpenProject research group within the OSC, responsible for the implementation and mentoring of various free and open source (FOSS) projects. Launched in 2005, the OSC has been responsible for widely promoting the benefits and use of FOSS locally and in Africa.

Msimang was nominated as one of the Top 10 IT personalities. The award, now in its 29th year, is presented by the Computer Society of South Africa (CSSA) in association with ITWeb, Gartner Africa and the Gordon Institute of Business Science. The winner will be announced on 7 November 2007 at the CSSA President's Annual Awards Banquet.

Mabaso has been appointed by the Minister of Communications, Dr Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri, to the Domain Name Authority board. The Domain Name Authority administers and manages the domain name space and licences, regulates registries and registrars, and publishes guidelines on the general administration and management of the .za domain name space. The board is chaired by Dr Hasmukh Gajjar (deputy CEO of Faritec and an executive of the J&J Group). Other board members include legal experts Preetta Bhagattjee and Mike Silber; Tenet CEO Dr Duncan Martin; Internet Service Providers Association of SA chairman Ant Brooks; Nirvani Dhevcharran, regional IS manager at SA Breweries; ISETT SETA chairman Lucky Masilela; and Blindlib chairman William Rowland.
