Scientists zoom in on a natural anti-oxidant
Bioscientists at the CSIR will be adding their scientific know-how to the knowledge of a group of traditional healers to formulate a new herbal remedy that could improve health through its anti-oxidant properties. The project is led by Dr Vinesh Maharaj, research group leader of bioprospecting at the CSIR.
New synthetic biology area to benefit health and industry
South Africa intends to achieve international recognition in synthetic biology within the next five years by establishing a synthetic biology emerging research area at the CSIR. This initiative is supported by the Department of Science and Technology and other partners. Dr Musa Mhlanga was recently appointed to steer the CSIR's efforts in this field and shares his views.
