CSIR to stimulate learners' interest in space science
Optronics researchers at the CSIR are developing a new educational telescope prototype kit, which is aimed at stimulating learners' interest in space science, engineering and technology (SET). This follows a one-year contract between the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the CSIR.
Optronics at the CSIR: the best in optical systems research and development
The CSIR's optronics group continues to work towards building its reputation of becoming the best in optical systems research and development. This follows its qualification of the Sumbandila payload camera work completed in 2007 in support of the Department of Science and Technology and the South African Space Agency.
CSIR enhances aeronautic skills with Air Force appointment
Major General (ret.) Des Barker has been appointed to the position of competency area manager for the CSIR's aeronautic systems as from 1 June 2008. General Barker, former Chief Director: Force Preparation of the South African Air Force (SAAF), brings a distinct proficiency to the aeronautic systems competency.
CSIR hosts subsonic aerodynamic testing meeting
The CSIR successfully hosted the Subsonic Aerodynamic Testing Association's 44th annual meeting - the first of its kind hosted in Africa. Apart from the networking, the CSIR delegation gained a deeper understanding and a comprehensive view of subsonic aerodynamics in both the aeronautic and automotive testing domains.
Landwards science group Held captivated
The CSIR's landwards sciences competency area recently hosted an internationally acclaimed detonics expert, Professor Manfred Held from Germany. Held spent three weeks at the CSIR with the landwards sciences' group, presenting courses in the detonics research field.
CSIR's aeronautical expert flying high
The CSIR's John Monk, a principal aeronautical engineer, has been appointed by the Civil Aviation Authority to a newly formed body that will investigate the incorporation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) into civil airspace.
