 Dr Sidney Parsons |
Walking away with a joint-first prize as well as the second prize for
his papers at a conference in Port Elizabeth recently, Dr Sidney Parsons
went to Barcelona in October to present a paper on hospital health
engineering for controlling airborne diseases.
Due to the success of his papers at the conference, the South African
Federation of Hospital Engineers sponsored Parsons to attend the
International Federation of Hospital Engineers conference in Spain. The
title of his paper was 'Hospital design to accommodate multi and
extensively drug-resistant TB patients'.
In July, Parsons had another honour bestowed on him - he was invited to be a lecturer during a two-week course for professionals at the Harvard School of Public Health. International participants attended the course on engineering methods for the control of airborne infections.
Professor Melvin First of Harvard, whom Parsons regards as a mentor and one who has a profound influence on his work, was the coordinator of the course and provided the overview to participants in the opening session. Parsons has been working with First and Dr Edward Nardell, also of Harvard, for almost 12 years now and he holds them in high esteem.
