Stylianides elected as ORSSA Fellow

The CSIR's Theo Stylianides (right), receiving his certificate as ORSSA Fellow from the society's President, Professor Sarma Yadavalli
Theo Stylianides, who leads the CSIR team involved in advanced modelling and supply-chain research, as well as statistical modelling and analysis, has been elected a Fellow of the Operations Research Society of South Africa (ORSSA).

The Fellowship is in recognition of his numerous contributions to the profession of operations research in general and his services to ORSSA over many years. In total, ORSSA has awarded Fellowship to just 11 people to date. Only one other CSIR staff member has been honoured in this way, namely Hans Ittmann, Executive Director of CSIR Built Environment.

A member of the management team of CSIR Built Environment, Stylianides has expertise in crime analysis, energy modelling, capacity-expansion modelling, quantitative methods for urban and regional planning, logistics modelling and project and business management.

He has been instrumental in leading many CSIR research projects, including the development of:

  • a vehicle-scheduling algorithm for South African Breweries
  • a model for clinker-capacity expansion at Blue Circle Cement
  • depot location models for Omnia Fertilizer
  • crime analysis and decision support for the South African Police Service
  • transmission-load forecasting models for Eskom
  • an electricity-consumption forecasting model for BHP Billiton
  • a container-growth forecasting model for Kagiso Urban Development.

Stylianides was previously awarded the prestigious Tom Rozwadowski medal by ORSSA for a paper on a model of clinker-capacity expansion, published in the European Journal of Operational Research. He belongs to various professional and learned societies, including the American Institute of Operations Research and Management Sciences. He is registered with the South African Council for Natural Scientists.
