International focus on road and airport pavement research

Professor Morris de Beer
Some of the latest international research on hot mix asphalt (HMA) road and airport pavements will be discussed at the CSIR on 4 March 2009.

The one-day seminar will form part of the 11th annual meeting of the editorial board of the International Journal of Road Materials and Pavement Design (RMPD). Nine editorial board members from abroad will present their latest findings on HMA research during this seminar.

"It is the first time that this group of highly respected professionals will meet in South Africa," says the CSIR's Professor Morris de Beer. "Presentations at the seminar will focus on HMA modelling, rheological properties of bitumen emulsion, accelerated testing of reflection cracking, viscoelasticity, re-inforced asphalt, ageing/healing of top down cracking and HMA quality control," explains De Beer. The editorial board members are from China, France, Japan, Portugal, Switzerland, the UK, the USA and South Africa, with De Beer being one of the associate editors.

Postgraduate students in civil engineering will attend the seminar as part of their course work and training. The meeting is being presented jointly by the Society for Asphalt Technology - Central Region, the RMPD and the CSIR.
