CSIR tackles the wake effect
CSIR engineers in the aeronautics domain are investigating the effects of the wake behind a ship on helicopter landings. This stems from general research into helicopter wake effects that assessed the aerodynamic influence on a helicopter encountering the wake from an upwind helicopter.
From military application to remote sensing to ... fashion?
After having collected colour data for seven years and compiled his measurements into a database, CSIR optronics researcher Johannes Baumbach will table his findings at a conference of the International Colour Association (AIC) in Australia in September this year.
International conference confirms relevance of gas turbine research
The CSIR's aeronautics research compares well with that of the best worldwide. This is the view of Glen Snedden, a mechanical engineer, who recently attended the International Gas Turbine Exposition - hosted by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in Florida, USA.
New 'eyes' for the SA Navy vessels
The CSIR researched and developed a short-range optical surveillance and tracking system known as the Wide Area Surveillance Prototype (WASP). The research aims to fulfil a need of the South African Navy (SAN) to have additional 'eyes' onboard a naval vessel that will detect and warn the crew against possible visual threats at sea.
