New media features incorporated into National Accessibility Portal

Continuous improvement to features and functionality has ensured that the latest release of the National Accessibility Portal (NAP), NAP 3.1, comes equipped with new media features. NAP is a project of the CSIR's Meraka Institute, developed in collaboration with a number of disabled persons' organisations.

The 'latest and greatest version' of this South African home-grown initiative steps up the drive to integrate persons with disabilities into the mainstream economy and society through the use of information and communications technology (ICT).

Dr Louis Coetzee, systems architect, is proud of the NAP team (comprising technical experts both within the Meraka Institute and outside) and the progress to date, "We have extended and improved significantly on our previous release by adding many new features, and by extending and improving existing features." He singles out the following highlights: Improved communication mechanisms through the introduction of messaging between NAP users; several mechanisms to improve the interactivity on NAP, such as 'Share on Facebook', 'Add NAP feed to your Facebook profile', 'Email to a friend', 'NAP messaging to a friend' and the ability to 'Discuss this content'.

He notes that the localisation of South African Sign Language (SASL) has been improved by SASL for static content. This allows NAP users who are literate in SASL to navigate easily through the portal to obtain relevant information.

Functionality for archive content improves the browsing experience, and routine bug fixes and many other small enhancements and improvements add to the quality of this release.
