Fingerprint-based identity authentication platform successfully developed
To improve South Africa's capacity to develop local biometrics products and minimise the country having to outsource national security safeguards, the CSIR embarked on the development of a fingerprint recognition platform to be used in fingerprint-based security products.
Better navigation using less data for autonomous robots
CSIR robotics researcher Deon Sabatta has developed a method to reduce the amount of data storage required for autonomous robots during navigation using persistent Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) features.
New technique for intelligent machines to identify traffic signs
Fred Senekal, a senior CSIR researcher involved in intelligent field robotics studies, has recently published a research paper in which a new computer algorithm for the detection and classification of triangular traffic signs, such as warning and yield signs is presented.
Two water demand prediction models put to the test
In a first-of-its-kind study in South Africa into water demand forecasting using computational intelligence techniques, CSIR researchers Dr Fulufhelo Nelwamondo and Ishmael Msiza, have found that the modelling technique based on how the human brain performs a particular task can be very useful.
