First young researcher symposium for nanoscience scheduled for Gauteng

The first Nanoscience Young Researcher Symposium (NYRS) for the Gauteng region will be held at the CSIR, Pretoria on 18 September 2009.

The symposium sets out to showcase cutting-edge research and product development in nanoscience and nanotechnology. It will provide a platform for young candidate researchers in the province to present and exchange recent advances on various aspects related to this field of science.

Besides honing the students' presentation skills, the symposium aims to increase awareness about nanoscience; the relevant role players and study areas; and the facilities available for use in nanoscience and nanotechnology in the country.

Nanotechnology has, among others, applications in manufacturing solutions, pharmaceutical development, nano-electronics and the creation of novel materials.

Institutions at the symposium include the Tshwane University of Technology, the University of Pretoria, the University of South Africa, MEDUNSA, the University of Johannesburg, the University of the Witwatersrand and the Vaal University of Technology as well as the CSIR and Mintek.

A panel of judges will award accolades to the three best presentations for Master's and PhD presentations.

It is anticipated that the NYRS will take place annually at provincial level.
