New building and construction products certified as fit-for-purpose

Ten new building and construction products were approved as 'fit-for-purpose' by the board of Agrément South Africa recently.

Agrément, an agency of CSIR Built Environment, is the internationally acknowledged, South African centre that conducts technical evaluations of unconventional and non-standardised building and construction products. When a product is deemed successful, an Agrément certificate is issued.

The products that received recent certification are:

  • An alternative steel frame building system for use in single storey building such as schools, small shops and detached houses (Alternative Steel Frame Building System).

  • A building system for the erection of single and double storey buildings (StyroFrame Building System).

  • A product used in industrial, commercial and residential slabs and pavements. It can also be used in thin-section, precast concrete components such as wall panels and as an additive to concrete used in precasting (Cazeden S-Crete Fibres).

  • A thin bituminous surfacing system for roads that have a maximum annual average daily truck traffic of up to 7 000 in free flowing traffic situations, and up to 2 000 trucks in areas with slow traffic, such as intersections (Friction Pave).

  • An underlay manufactured from a laminate of UV-stabilised spunbonded material and polyethylene. It can be used to reduce air movement between tiles and reduce access of wind-driven rain and dust to the roof space (Gundle UT Woven Underlay Membrane).

  • A septic tank as an on-site sanitary disposal system (digester) in conjunction with sub-soil percolation systems (soak-away or French drain), where soils have good drainage properties (Jojo Septic Tanks).

  • An undertile membrane manufactured from two outer layers of non-woven, UV- stabilised, spunbonded polypropylene. The two outer layers are laminated and the product is suitable for installation in tiled-roof buildings with timber roof construction with a pitch less than 60 degrees (Nam-Tex Blue Undertile Membrane).

  • Resin-bonded roof tiles produced by compression moulding, using a blend of graded sand and recycled waste plastic (Resintile Roof Tiles and Ridges).

  • A non-traditional soil stabiliser additive for road construction, used in combination with cement for sealed and unsealed road base construction (Roadcem: Soil Stabilizer).

  • Roof barriers that are manufactured from ultraviolet, light-resistant, non-toxic flame-retardant material (Spunsulation 3 and 5 Roofing Radiant Barriers).
