Life sciences has become a vast research enterprise worldwide and is not regarded as a single discipline. In South Africa, the importance of the life sciences in understanding and improving human health, and in the development of sustainable approaches to our natural environment, has been recognised through the implementation of a number of important government-led initiatives including the National Research and Development Strategy and the National Biotechnology Strategy.
