SA public gets fire updates on TV

South Africans saw a world first on television when the SABC became the first public broadcaster to televise active fire maps as part of its weather reports early in June 2006. The fire map, developed jointly by the CSIR and power utility Eskom Holdings, shows active fires throughout South Africa as detected by satellites over the preceding 12 hours. Read more ...


Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality invests in research for automotive industry

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) has been dubbed the `Detroit of South Africa' by some because of the key role it plays in the car-manufacturing and vehicle assembling industry. A new research initiative involving the CSIR, the Automotive Industry Development Centre (AIDC) and the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), is set to ensure that the city further enhances its capabilities in this domain. Local tourism industry set to benefit from e-business survey

A collaborative initiative between South African and European researchers and the South African Department of Communications has tested whether an internationally applied e-business survey (EBS) methodology could be used successfully in a developing economy such as South Africa. Research partners include the CSIR and Trigrammic in South Africa, TNO in the Netherlands, and the Free University of Brussels in Belgium. Read more ...
