CSIR focuses on sustainable science for the future
An appropriate structure and environment where researchers can
flourish and grow into the future generation of innovators - that is what the CSIR is creating.
This observation is made by outgoing CSIR Board Chairperson, Roger Jardine, in the CSIR's 2005/6
annual report that was tabled in Parliament by the Minister of Science and Technology,
Mosibudi Mangena in September 2006 2006. Jardine continues to express particular interest in the
impact of the organisation's young researchers establishment fund aimed at assisting young
researchers in following their own research ideas, developing their own areas of expertise
and building their reputations as credible researchers.

The Art and Science of Environmental Impact Assessments
Opinion piece by Dr Alex Weaver and Dr Sibusiso Sibisi, CSIR
Forty years ago, environmental impact assessment (EIA) did not exist. Today it is recognised
as one of the most successful policy innovations and a formal - if not legal - requirement in most countries world
wide, including South Africa. "Sustainable development" was introduced as a concept almost 20 years ago (Brundtland Report, 1987).

Steering women towards science
The year 2006 is celebrated as the "Year of the Woman” in South Africa to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the women's march to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956. These individuals contributed a great deal to raise awareness of the necessity to uplift and empower women as a fundamental aspect towards strengthening our democracy. As South Africa honours these brave women, so too does the CSIR celebrate its women in science, and the contribution they make to improve the lives of other people in South Africa as well as raising the profile of women in this field. Read the latest edition of the CSIR ScienceScope, titled Women in Science. |
