CSIR forensic fire investigations

The CSIR forensic fire investigation group undertakes investigations, both locally and abroad, into the origin and cause of fires for, amongst others, the short-term insurance industry. The group provides a sustainable, high quality forensic fire investigation service that adapts to market interest and adheres to international standards.

Service offering

The forensic fire investigation services undertaken are typically related to losses caused by fires to structures, vehicles and grasslands. Investigations are conducted using the prescribed scientific methods and results are fully documented, precisely reported and completed timely. The CSIR team provides expert evidence in litigation and also offers fire investigation training to clients.

Commonly, investigations are carried out into fires in residential, commercial and industrial buildings. The team has access to advanced gas chromatography and mass spectrometry analytical techniques for fire debris analysis - a key factor in the detection of accelerants.

As part of its social responsibility, the team regularly liaises with the construction industry regarding chemical properties and combustibility of building material.

An on-site fire laboratory for material testing ensures a quick turn-around time and dependable results. The team consists of individuals with comprehensive knowledge of chemistry, extensive experience in forensic fire investigations and who are certified by the International Association of Arson Investigators.

Affiliations

Strategic affiliations and global networking are an integral part of the group's operations, resulting in access to leading international research and innovation in fire investigations.

The CSIR is a member of the Standards Generating Body (SGB) for forensic sciences under the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) and the founder of the South African Chapter of the International Association for Arson Investigators (IAAI). Through its involvement in the IAAI, the group provides training to the public sector, especially the South African Police Service, contributing to crime investigation and generally raising standards.

Investigations are conducted in accordance with the recommended practice contained in international guides to fire investigation (i.e. NFPA 921 and 1033).
