The researchers at the CSIR national Laser Centre have developed new laser devices that are world leading both in their design and performance. Solid-state lasers utilise specially selected synthetic crystals to produce laser beams in the mid-infrared spectral region, making them ideal for applications in health, environmental monitoring and defence. In particular, these lasers can be used for laser surgery without bleeding, for detection of atmospheric pollutants over large distances, and for the protection of aircraft against heat-seeking missiles. Several international organisations are interested in these high-energy laser devices, with some already in the test phase for industrial applications.
