Mathematical optics

Opportunities for students

We are always looking for promising students with an interest in lasers and optics.  For the mathematically or computationally inclined, we offer an environment for high-quality mathematics applied to real research problems in optics.  Although we form the Mathematical Optics group, we also do extensive experimental work to confirm our ideas and predictions. Thus, hands-on skills are also highly valued in our group.  We offer MSc and PhD studentships valued at R120 000 and R150 000 per annum, respectively, for full-time study at the CSIR National Laser Centre. You will have the opportunity to work closely with the centre’s staff, while registered at a South African university.  We also offer summer vacation work for students who wish to expose themselves to the environment during the December/January university holidays.  To find out more about these opportunities, please email Dr Andrew Forbes
