In the context of the many challenges facing the South African education system, Meraka is working with the Department of Basic Education and other stakeholders to develop ICT interventions based on the needs of education.
The Department of Basic Education's Action Draft Plan to 2014: Towards the Realisation of Schooling 2025 has 27 goals that can be addressed by ICT research and development and innovation (RD&I).
Being off-grid or on the wrong side of several divides haunts many rural developing communities in South and southern Africa and has resulted in these communities having insufficient access to government service delivery, extensive trade opportunities into, as well as out of these communities, and modern technology, connectivity and information. Meraka has a proven track record in addressing some of the socio-economic challenges in rural development through ICT RD&I, and integrating with other CSIR capabilities and offerings in this domain.
