Applied geoscience

Applied geoscience undertakes research to delineate the structure and grade of ore bodies and their host rocks to enable more productive and safer mining.

Current Projects

Glass Rock

If mining is to become more efficient and effective, miners must know where to find the orebody. This is the aim of the Glass Rock project. Tools will be developed to assist in predicting what is ahead so that it can be mined more effectively. The tools may be geological, such as improved models of rock quality; geophysical, such as methods to determine the presence of faults; or even geochemical, such as methods that determine the nature and hence the risk of spontaneous combustion through real-time underground gas analysis. Impact: Better knowledge of the orebody leads to direct operational benefits. The most important are lower dilution; better use of assets or reduced opportunity cost; more accurate valuations; and improved safety.
