The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in South Africa is one of the leading scientific and technology research, development and implementation organisations in Africa. It undertakes directed research and development for socio-economic growth.
Novel soft tissue filler The CSIR has developed an injectable, resorbable soft tissue bulking product that has potential applications in fields ranging from minimally invasive cosmetic surgery to drug delivery and tissue engineering.
Crab shells to the rescue with your next bandage? CSIR researchers are investigating the antibacterial properties of crab shells, when these are used as electrospun chitosan nanofibre membranes. The idea is to find the right formula of chitosan-based polymeric solution that may be used to manufacture wound dressings.
Natural fibre composites for construction applications One of the projects that form part of the new strategic investment areas within the CSIR deals with the use of natural fibres in construction products. This initiative seeks to make a meaningful contribution to the concept of bio-based housing. As part of this project, a prototype natural fibre-based insulated sandwiched panel has been recently developed at the CSIR under the leadership of Dr Rajesh Anandjiwala. The project has a strong focus on both materials and application-oriented product development.
