Smart Polymers

Almost every individual may during their lifetime require some form of medical surgery to replace a specific tissue or organ due to old age, injury or disease.

Innovative research is being conducted at P&C to develop biomaterials that can be used to replace, enhance or treat a diseased or damaged tissue, body part or function. The CSIR’s research in the field of biomaterials primarily focuses on the use of novel polymeric and/or bioceramic materials for application in bone and cartilage replacement, soft tissue bulking, medical devices and cell culturing.

This highly multidisciplinary research area brings together expertise from a wide variety of disciplines including material science, polymer chemistry, molecular and cell biology, engineering, internal medicine and physiology.
