Academics from the prestigious Moscow Lomonosov's State University in Russia and the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) explored opportunities for collaboration with the CSIR at a seminar this week.
Hosting the delegation on behalf of the CSIR, Dr Michael Shatalov, from the CSIR Materials Science and Manufacturing operating unit, said different aspects of possible future cooperation had been considered in the field of applied mathematics. Shatalov has recently been appointed as Professor Extraordinaire at the Faculty of Science of the TUT.
The discussions centred around challenges regarding vibrations of solid distributed structures, modern methods of linear and nonlinear wave propagation in non-homogeneous waveguides, nonlinear vibrations, and acoustics.
Challenges facing South Africa and the world, such as the development and identification of ecological and HIV mathematical models, were explored.
