Overview: Sensor Science and Technology

The Sensor Science and Technology (SST) competence area conducts research and development (R&D) work across the cycle of innovation from strategic basic research to technology transfer and industrialisation in the fields of smart structures and materials, electro-optic sensing and imaging and ultrasonics.

Within these areas, research work is undertaken with a view to the introduction and adoption of new sensing technologies by industry. Novel applications are investigated across a broad range of industries, including energy, defence, medical, process control, security, food and beverage, and optical systems.

Research areas

Research projects

  • New methods of modelling the performance of piezoelectric transducers, attached to elastic waveguides
  • A slightly unusual solid state actuator is being investigated.
  • The development of a combined visible and ultra-violet imaging system has led to the requirement for aerial
  • inspection technology utilising multi-spectral imaging technology (visible, UV and IR).
  • A new direction of R&D is the use of high power ultrasound.
