Ultrasonics

This research group undertakes R&D in the field of ultrasonic based systems and has developed solutions across many industries, including medical diagnostic ultrasound technology (targeted for health care in developing nations), underwater acoustics (sonar), air ultrasonics (e.g. level & flow measurement) and industrial / medical power-ultrasound.

The group provides ongoing R&D support to the South African Navy in the sonar field. Activities include the design and development of novel acoustic transducers, arrays and systems with integrated signal processing capabilities, the modelling and simulation of the acoustic field and behaviour of transducers, specialised fabrication of sonar transducers and arrays including state-of-the-art 1-3 piezocomposite sonar materials, as well as the running of an internationally accredited acoustic test and evaluation facility.
