Smart Structures and Materials

This research group operates mainly in two areas of smart structures and materials, namely, piezoelectric actuators and motors and guided-wave ultrasound. Piezoelectric actuators find applications, such as micro-positioning of optical components and modelling and optimisation techniques are being developed which support a capability to provide custom solutions.

Guided-wave ultrasound provides a method of inspecting or monitoring the integrity of infrastructure, such as rails and pipelines. Techniques for predicting the waves that propagate in waveguides, the transduction of these waves and the interaction of these waves with existing waveguide damage are currently being developed.
