CSIR Materials Science and Manufacturing

Strategy

CSIR Materials Science and Manufacturing centres its research and development activities around six strategies, namely:

  • Aerospace Sector – Play a leading role in the development of a local UAV industry that produces UAVs especially suited to South African conditions and needs. Also become a preferred technology partner to big name global aerospace players, in the field of advanced materials.
  • Automotive Sector - Be a catalyst to significantly raise the local content of South African manufactured vehicles, through helping local suppliers implement technologies to manufacture parts and systems that are currently imported. Also to be a preferred R&D supplier to Asian vehicle OEMs and batter suppliers.
  • Bio-based buildings - Stimulate the development of new industries from raw material production through to new building design and construction, resulting in buildings with reduced carbon footprints.
  • Energy - Play a leading role in the development and/or selection of energy technologies to meet the needs of energy security, supply and affordability in SA.
  • Health - Delivering accessible and affordable diagnostic and treatment solutions to the top 5 health issues in South Africa
  • Micro-Manufacturing – Help to change the face of the SA manufacturing industry to be globally competitive in micro-manufacturing.
