A multi-disciplinary team from the CSIR is involved in developing a Regional Centre for Spatial Analysis and Modelling (ReCSAM) in collaboration with the University of Limpopo. The aim of the Centre is to develop a sound geospatial curriculum to ensure internationally competitive capacity in the field of environmental management, with specific emphasis on the sustainable development of rural and disadvantaged regions. The planned Centre will meet international standards in Spatial Analysis and Modelling applied to the environmental, economic, social and health sectors.
The University of Limpopo has received a grant of EUR 800 000 annually over the next five years to develop a geospatial curriculum as it became a partner in the Institutional Cooperation Programme hosted by the Vlaamse Interuniversitaire Raad (Flemish Interuniversity Council).
The Institutional University Cooperation programme (IUC) aims at building institutional capacity at selected universities in the South. The IUC activities focus on supporting joint research projects and increasing the production of post-graduate students in different disciplines, both being ultimately closely related. Furthermore, research and educational capacities of the partner University academic staff will be extended (for more information please visit http://iuc.vliruos.be/intro.php).
