Meet our research leaders

Dr Bob Scholes
Dr Bob Scholes, a systems ecologist, is leader of the ecosystem processes and dynamics research group, and a Fellow of the CSIR.

Dr Brian W van Wilgen
Dr Brian van Wilgen is a terrestrial ecologist specialising in fire ecology and the ecology and management of invasive alien plant species. He has a keen interest in the conservation and management of all ecosystems.
Professor Colin Stuart Everson
Professor Colin Everson's primary interests are in terrestrial plant ecology, particularly plant community dynamics in response to fire.

Dr David Le Maitre
Dr David Le Maitre is a plant ecologist specialising in conservation biology, invasion ecology and catchment hydrology.

Dr Belinda Reyers
Dr Belinda Reyers is a conservation biologist whose research focuses on biodiversity. She heads up the biodiversity and ecosystem services research group.
Dr Jan van Aardt
Dr Jan van Aardt is a remote sensing scientist, specialising in hyperspectral and hyper-structural remote sensing, system modelling, and integrating inputs from a variety of sensing sources towards optimised vegetation system description.
Marilyn Govender
Marilyn Govender does research on water resources management, with a focus on plant water use, land use hydrology, hydrological modelling, remote sensing hydrological and plant water use applications.
Jeanne Nel
Jeanne Nel is a conservation biologist and GIS specialist. She is currently employed at the CSIR as a principal researcher to undertake projects and research in the field of biodiversity and ecosystem services.
Dr Brent Newman
Dr Brent Newman specialises in marine and estuarine ecotoxicology.
