Focus on Natural Resources and the Environment (NRE) energy research Addressing the energy challenges of Africa
Africa faces major challenges in the supply, distribution and consumption of energy. The security of energy supply, in general, has received top priority due to the escalating prices of hydrocarbon fuels. In terms of distribution many communities still lack access to modern energy. The intensity of the energy used is a further concern, as are the emissions from burning fossil fuels. These challenges beckon R&D into alternative energy value chains to assess, demonstrate and identify the most sustainable options, and future, for Africa.
