Air pollution is a global problem and knows no boundaries. In South Africa this problem is now receiving significantly more attention with the promulgation of the National Environmental Management: Air Quality Act (No. 39 of 2004).

Research into environmental health seeks to determine the health risks associated with a number of environmental hazards and explores how people are vulnerable to them.
Biological sulphate removal technology
The current research being conducted by the CSIR focuses on adapting microorganisms from cattle rumen fluid to room temperature.
