Tree improvement: Courses, conferences and symposia

The CSIR courses in tree breeding have attracted participants from some 22 different countries since 1991. The courses have facilitated the transfer of South African expertise to scientists and technicians from as far afield as Spain, Japan, Australia and Chile, and from numerous African countries, including Botswana, Zambia, Congo and Zimbabwe. The courses have also played a key role in providing opportunities for the upliftment of tree breeders in third world countries and previously disadvantaged forestry technicians in South Africa.
The CSIR tree breeding team is committed to quality and excellence in the presentation of these courses. The team has a policy of ongoing improvement, while feedback from participants is used to further develop the courses. The courses are designed with a strong practical component that ranges from class and computer-based exercises to hands-on work in the field, for example doing pollinations or laying out a trial. The practical components of the courses are aimed at ensuring the participants grasp the theoretical concepts and can apply these directly. Specialist guest lecturers from different universities and industry participate on a regular basis in the courses. A comprehensive manual is available for each course and this serves as a valuable reference for participants once they return to their individual places of work.
