Professor Geerthsen is a quantitative geneticist and plant and animal breeder with a long and distinguished research career. Although officially retired, he has been appointed as a research associate to the Tree improvement research group and provides technical guidance and mentorship on projects as well as peer review on research outputs.
Dr Steve Verryn
Dr Steve Verryn is a quantitative geneticist specialising in tree breeding. He is the founder of Creation Breeding innovations and is a CSIR associate scientist. He obtained his MSc (Cum laude) in 1985 and his PhD in 1994 for his work on improving Best Linear Prediction, and is a NRF C1 rated scientist and author and co-author of over 40 publications and conference papers.
Marianne Hettasch
Marianne Hettasch has a MSc degree in Genetics and a diploma in datametrics. Her MSc dissertation focussed on the applicability of BLUP for the selection of clones in Eucalyptus hybrid populations. She specialises in quantitative genetics and has a keen interest in biotechnology and cytogenetics. She has experience in vegetable and tree breeding.
Karen Eatwell
Karen Eatwell has an MSc (Agric) genetics degree and a computer science diploma. She is currently busy with a PhD in quantitative genetics looking at instability or collinearity in Best Linear Unbiased Prediction using data from two generations of open pollinated E. grandis planted in a series of trials. .
Rochelle Parsons
Rochelle Parsons is a quantitative geneticist specialising in tree improvement and breeding strategy, particularly of pine species. Her research activities include hybrid analysis, index selection and genetic parameter analysis.
Nuveshen Naidoo
Nuveshen Naidoo has a BSc (Hons) in genetics and is presently working on his MSc that involves rooting in a new eucalypt hybrid.
Vuyisile Hobololo
Vuyisile has an MSc in Entomology and is currently completing a LLB. He is the Tree Improvement group's Commercialisation Representative.
Marelize Moolman
Marelize offers administration support to Steve, the research group leader, as well as the rest of the Tree Improvement group. Marelize is also the course coordinator for all CSIR Tree Improvement courses. Marelize has been with the CSIR since 1991 and joined Tree Improvement in 2006.
Nelspruit
Brian Pierce
Brian Pierce is a research forester, involved mainly with general tree improvement of both pines and eucalypts, including the cold-tolerant eucalypt breeding programme, tropical eucalypts and hybrids, site-species matching and commercial and rural afforestation in southern Africa. Key areas of expertise include applied forest tree breeding, Eucalyptus species and hybrids.
Christopher Komakech
Prior to joining the CSIR, Chris Komakech spent a year with Sappi Research breeding pine and Cold Tolerant Eucalypts (CTEs). He joined ICFR in 1999 as a tree breeding technician mainly dealing with cold-tolerant eucalypts. He also has experience with sub-tropical Eucalypts when employed by MondiBP before joining CSIR Tree Improvement programme based in Nelspruit.
Jantjie Nolonolo
Jantjie is a technical assistant with experience in pine and eucalypt breeding activities including trial assessment, planting and control pollinations.
Isaac Shabangu
Isaac Shabangu’s expertise in pine and eucalypt breeding include trial assessment, trial layout and establishment, eucalypt cuttings, sowing and raising seedlings and pollinations. Shabangu is a technical assistant who also has experience in the layout and planting of fuel wood and woodcraft trials all over South Africa.
Joseph Nyundu
Joseph Nyundu is a technical assistant with experience in pine and eucalypt breeding activities including trial assessment, planting and control pollinations.

Durban
Amith Sivlal
Amith Sivlal has a BSc (Hons) degree in seed biology and cellular biology (plant sciences). He has a keen interest in forestry and reproductive biology.

Derek Hohls
Derek Hohls has a wide range of experience in designing, developing and implementing information systems for environmental and natural resources management. He is currently working on the development of web-based platforms; the group's TreeBase system is his major focus. He is co-employed by the Meraka Institute in the emerging field of Sensor Web enablement.
