Hardware, Firmware and Embedded Software Design Engineer

The CSIR: Defence, Peace, Safety and Security (DPSS) unit has a vacancy in the Radar and Electronic Warfare Systems (Radar & EW) competence area for a Hardware, Firmware and Embedded Software Design Engineer. This competence area provides a well-balanced portfolio of capabilities to perform research and development (R&D) and knowledge applications including technological innovation required for detection, tracking, measurement, identification, protection and countermeasures for sensors operating in the microwave spectrum. The main application area is national defence and security.

The vacancy is in the Experimental Radar Systems group which integrates the capabilities for conceptualisation, development and supply of specialised radar test and evaluation equipment.

 


Doctoral Studentships:Marine remote sensing (Cape Town & Pretoria)

The research unit is seeking two (2) motivated and enthusiastic Doctoral Students to conduct original research of the development of vessel, as well as sea state monitoring using satellite data. The research will contribute to Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) by monitoring our territorial waters for ships that may be involved in oil pollution, piracy, fishing incursions and smuggling, as well as the extraction of sea state parameters (such as wind speed, ocean current etc.).

One student will be based at CSIR Meraka Institute in Pretoria while the other at CSIR NRE in Cape Town. These dynamic groups comprise electronic engineers, computer scientists, and oceanographic, as well as environmental remote-sensing specialists.

Senior Technical Advisor

National Foundry Technology Network

The CSIR Materials Science and Manufacturing (MSM) unit has established the National Foundry Technology Network (NFTN) which is funded by the Department of Trade and Industry (the dti). This network is overseen in collaboration with industry, represented by the South African Institute of Foundrymen (SAIF) and the Aluminium Casters Association (ACA), and other stakeholders. The NFTN is a national initiative that facilitates the development of a globally competitive South African foundry industry through appropriate skills training, technology transfer and diffusion of state-of-the-art technologies. This requires the participation of a multitude of service providers such as universities, training institutions, science councils, consultants, and the foundry industry itself, whose activities are guided and coordinated through the NFTN.

This will be a three-year contract to support the project leader in management of the foundry level component of the NFTN, with a possibility of extension. We are looking for a dynamic and competent:

Senior Technical Advisor

About the job:
Based in Pretoria, the Senior Technical Advisor will assist the NFTN project leader to organise, implement and control all related projects associated to the dti competitiveness improvement programme on foundry level and its link to the cluster/supply chain level activities. This includes the efficient and effective management of available resources to reach the project goals on time and budget and specific technical support to individual foundries.

Senior Researcher (Mathematical Modelling)

CSIR Modelling and Digital Science (MDS) unit has a vacant position for a Senior Researcher in the Applied Mathematical and Modelling (AMM) competence area. AMM focuses on finding solutions to problems using mathematical sciences, scientific computing and information and communications technology platforms. Researchers model phenomena ranging from a drug delivery system for people to atmospheric, geophysical and oceanographic studies to understand climate change. This group strives to improve decision processes, using systems-level thinking and science, to contribute to better planning for improving the quality of life for South Africans. Thus, researchers seek to assist in decision-making by applying a fast, accurate – quality and correct – and cost-effective approach.

The incumbent will be interested in the field of multi-scale multi-physics prepared to take Computational Continuum Mechanics, Material Modelling and Optimisation to a new level. This position is based in Pretoria.


Researcher: Senior researcher: Nonwovens

The CSIR contributes novel and ground-breaking materials, composites, devices, techniques and processes for industries such as automotive, aerospace, health, energy and the built environment. Its world-class materials science and manufacturing professionals are also playing a significant role in the scientific and technological foundations for alternative energy security in South Africa whilst assisting the South African manufacturing industry to be globally competitive in micromanufacturing.
 
The competence area, which has state-of-the-art equipment, has research focus areas comprising: nonwoven, fibre processing, fibre modification and fibre reinforced composites manufacturing and characterisation. The nonwoven laboratory is fully equipped with carding, cross-lapping, needle-punching, hydro-entangling, chemical, thermofusing and calendar bonding techniques. The nonwoventesting laboratory comprises relevant nonwoven characterising facilities such as: image analysis; water permeation and transmission; porometer; surface tension and wettability measurement; air filtration; acoustic and geotextiles testing; etc.

System Engineer: Integrated Systems Group (X7)

CSIR Defence, Peace, Safety and Security (DPSS) unit has permanent vacancies for seven Systems Engineers who will contribute to the CSIR's success in the Command Control and Information Warfare (CCIW) competence group through its people and process excellence. The group focuses on the systems-of-systems level understanding of problems and finding solutions to hard problems. While the CCIW area has the most urgent need for systems engineers, there are opportunities for systems engineers in other areas of DPSS. Systems engineering is an interdisciplinary approach and means to enable the realisation of successful systems. It focuses on defining customer needs and required functionality early in the development cycle, documenting requirements, then proceeding with design synthesis and system validation while considering the complete problem (International Council on Systems Engineering; 2004).
