Constant wind speeds of five to six metre per second – that is ideally what you require for operating a wind turbine effectively for electricity generation. “We are obtaining data on wind speeds and frequency along the South African coastal and escarpment regions as part of an international project to update the Wind Atlas for South Africa (WASA),” explains Eric Prinsloo of the CSIR’s infrastructure engineering competence area.

The theme for 2010 www.un.org/disabilities/default.asp?id=1540> is Keeping the promise: Mainstreaming disability in the Millennium Development Goals towards 2015 and beyond, a fitting backdrop to the contribution by Willem van der Walt, a blind researcher at the CSIR. Van der Walt worked with a fellow researcher, Gerhard van den Berg, on the development of a computer for use by blind persons, called ‘the notetaker for the blind.

Kersch Naidoowas born in KwaZulu-Natal and had a bit of a nomadic childhood as he schooled at various towns such as Queenstown, Tongaat, La Mercy and the Lower South Coast. As a young boy, he was inquisitive and very passionate about the manufacture of items around him; leading to his eventual decision to become a chemical engineer.
