Since 2003, the CSIR has been involved in several projects specifically aimed at the development of an integrated persistent, ubiquitous surveillance system to assist South Africa's forces in curbing weapons trafficking, smuggling, poaching, piracy, illegal immigration and terrorism.
In the development of the key elements and required functions of such an integrated persistent, ubiquitous surveillance system, it is crucial to verify initial modelling and simulation results with actual measured data. It is often also required to measure real-life data to develop the empirical and simulation models required in the initial development stages, due to the lack of precise and accurate models.
CSIR Defence, Peace, Safety and Security has launched a series of measurement
trials using its various measurement
facilities. The main goal of these trials is to provide
real-life data that will be used during the development
of the various key elements and required functions.
Subsets of the recorded data of the various measurement trials are made available to the international radar research community on this website.
