About 25 DST-funded projects relate to the development of the South African essential oils sector (for example Lippia javanica, buchu, rose geranium and lemon grass) and medicinal plants (for example African ginger, Perlagonium sidoides and milk thistle) and involve the establishment of sustainable community-based enterprises across the country. These projects are based on CSIR-developed technologies and are in various stages of development, typically receiving DST funding for three to five years. In addition, there are three sector-level projects involving the development of a management information system using telemetry, the development of herbal supplements, and a market development initiative called Ulwazi Botanicals.
The PGWC (Provincial Government of the Western Cape) contracts relate to the establishment of various technology-based enterprises in the Western Cape and local capacity building with regard to technology transfer and enterprise development. These contracts are typically implemented over a three-year period. |
