Opportunities within CSIR Built Environment – Hand-washing Dispenser
The Hand-washing Dispenser
The Hand-washing Dispenser (HWD), a self-closing tap, is a CSIR proprietary technology. The main interest with this device is the promotion of hand washing as a good health hygienic practice; the CSIR is thus looking for entities that have a track record in the health and hygiene sector. Such entities should demonstrate access to appropriate contacts to enable the effective adoption of the device.
The technology is available for local and international licensing. Subject to the business model adopted, this product presents a sustainable business opportunity.
The HWD is a tried and tested product, with more than 100 000 units already installed in South Africa alone. It is ideal for areas water is a scarce resource - the device, combined with an empty 2 litre bottle, holds enough water for about 30 washes. The HWD is mechanically operated, easy to operate and install, cheap and requires low maintenance.
Its target markets include:
Low-income households; schools; disaster areas, and large gatherings such as refugee camps,
