The ICT for Earth Observation Research Group (ICT4EO) at the CSIR Meraka Institute researches and develops Earth Observation Information and Communications Technologies that have societal benefit. ICT4EO is engaged in the development of spatio-temporal data mining processing chains and advanced open standards compliant data, and processing infrastructures such as the Sensor Web. This is done in support of national science and space priorities and the South African Earth Observation Strategy in particular.

MDS focuses on advanced mathematical modelling (AMM), information security (IS) and hosting mobile intelligent autonomous systems (MIAS).The unit assists in the CSIR’s drive to strengthen science, engineering and technology (SET) outputs; develops human capital; and invests in emerging research areas (ERA), including nanotechnology, synthetic biology and mobile intelligent autonomous systems. This position is based in Pretoria.
The incumbent will be responsible for requirements analysis, architecture, verification and validation and systems engineering management as well as leading performance analysis and validation of models for trade off studies within MDS. An important part of the job will be to develop systems engineering skills in other engineers.

Disease therapy. The technology aims to reduce both the duration and frequency of
treatment through effective, targeted and controlled release of drugs using nanotechnology.

The Human Language Technologies (HLT) competence area (CA) of CSIR Meraka Institute
studies the way in which speech- and language-related technologies can be created and
applied to benefit the people of southern Africa. In collaboration with a network of partners,
the Speech Technologies research group of the competence area is creating speech and
language technologies such as automatic speech recognition systems; speech synthesis
systems; computer-assisted language learning systems; and mobile data collection systems.
Statistical pattern recognition and artificial intelligence research form the basis from which
many of these technologies are developed. These technologies are then applied and tested
in real-world applications, such as telephony-based information systems, by the Speech
Applications research group of the CA. The HLT CA operates in a youthful, energetic

CSIR Modelling and Digital Science (MDS) is an operating unit with three competency areas focusing on Advanced Mathematical Modelling (AMM), Information Security (IS), as well as Mobile Intelligent Autonomous Systems (MIAS). The unit assists in the CSIR’s drive to strengthen Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) outputs and to develop human capital through a studentship programme for Master’s and Doctoral studies based on the research work done at the CSIR under the co-supervision of a CSIR expert. The information security group is concerned with processes, methodologies and techniques used to protect information from unauthorised access. The major drive towards the establishment of this competency revolves around the need to develop a capability on information security systems. This is also driven by the need for research and development (R&D) of technologies that can be deployed locally.
MDS:IS focuses on three research areas, which are complementary to each other. The areas are (A) Smart card (B) Network security and (C) Biometrics.
|MSM Vacation Work|
CSIR’s Materials Science & Manufacturing has positions for third- and fourth-year students to perform vacation work in June/July 2011, November/December 2011 and January 2012 at the CSIR in the following fields:
This area has to do with the control of nanoliter and picoliter volumes of fluid on devices. Issues to be considered deal with the design, manufacture, control and analysis of these devices including: modelling; materials; moulding and replication; sealing and assembly; On-board sensing; interfaces between the micro and macro worlds; and applications of micro-fluidic devices. This area of study is multi-disciplinary and as such, applicants from any engineering discipline would be considered.
Mechatronics/Mechanical, Computer Science, Computer Engineering,
and Electronic Engineering Students will be working with electronics, embedded software, robotics, mechanical systems, small projects and/or laboratory work. Specific tasks will be identified in these areas and students will be expected to perform laboratory work or perform literature studies.
Smart Polymers & Biomaterials
The CSIR's research in the field of Smart Polymers & Biomaterials focuses on the use of novel smart polymers, advanced surfaces and/or bio-ceramic materials in the areas of tissue engineering (i.e. bone, cartilage, soft-tissue); organ preservation; non-invasive cell culture; water purification, bacteria capture, gas barrier technology and self-immobilised enzymes.
The Molecular Biomaterials research group has a vacancy for a R&D Technician in the synthetic biology emerging research area (ERA). The candidate will work closely with the research and development (R&D) team which is developing and assessing product prototypes for the life sciences R&D market, and will pursue the development and validation of processes for the synthesis of microsphere products including assisting in establishing QA/QC procedures.
